No Rain Poncho: Disney World

How could a rain poncho veteran forgot one for an amusement park?

When our hardworking intern decided to take a few days off, he asked me to fill in for him on this blog.  Because I am a 13 year veteran of the rain poncho business (yes, that’s right, 13 years selling ponchos!), you might think that I never allow myself to get caught without some form of rain wear (rain poncho, umbrella, something).  Unfortunately, you would be wrong.

Several years ago my family drove to Orlando, FL with my sister’s family to visit what many believe is the pinnacle of the American theme park experience:  Walt Disney World.  We stayed at an off-property resort and enjoyed hanging out together at the pool and relaxing a good part of the time, but two days of our trip were earmarked for enjoying Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.

Our day at Magic Kingdom was fun, as expected, and included only the briefest sprinkle of rain, which we almost completely avoided while riding Peter Pan’s Flight.  What little time we did spend in this bit of rain reminded me that, though they weren’t really needed at that moment, I had left our rain ponchos at the resort.  You might think now that after this event, in addition to selling rain ponchos for a living, I would be certain to carry our rain ponchos during our visit to Animal Kingdom.  Sadly, you would be wrong yet again.

Two days later the eight of us spent the day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  We had a great time with the 3D and other effects in the It’s Tough to be a Bug! movie.  (A story for another day is how my niece about climbed through me at one particularly startling moment during the show.)  The Festival of the Lion King show was amazing, the Kilimanjaro Safari ride allowed us some closer than expected views of some beautiful, African animals, and Expedition Everest was the topper for most of the adults.

As the end of the day grew closer, we noted a sudden, significant change in the weather.  The shorts and t-shirts we had been perfectly comfortable in all day were suddenly not quite enough to keep the goose bumps at bay, and the previously blue sky was now covered by clouds.  We were about half way through the park heading to the exit when the sky opened up into a full on downpour with a blowing wind deciding to make an appearance as well.  Caught again without our rain ponchos!  We ran toward the exit as we watched everyone around us cover up in the rain ponchos they had either purchased in or brought to the park.

The good news?  The park was closing, and we had been headed toward the exit already.  Our day hadn’t been ruined by rain, and we hadn’t had to purchase extra rain ponchos.  The (sort of) bad news?  We ended up cold and wet while our rain ponchos stayed neatly folded in their packages, unused and unnecessary, for the remainder of our vacation.

Planning a fun family trip? Don’t let the rain ruin it! www.rainponchosonline.com
